Sperry was born in 1935 when founder Paul Sperry, an avid sailor with a passion for adventure, was faced with a problem that stood in the way of his passion: maintaining traction on a slippery boat deck. Taking inspiration from his dog Prince who didn’t slip on ice, he turned over Prince’s paw which became the inspiration behind his inventive non-slip sole which would feature a canvas upper and a herringbone pattern of grooves on the sole. What would become the world’s first boat shoe soon became a hit when every member of the Cruising Club of America wrote to Mr. Sperry requesting a pair of the shoes. During World War II, the US War Department named Sperry Top-Sider as the official shoes of the US Navy, and thanks to their timeless design and durability, the boat shoes have embraced by sailors and style-savvy men to this day.
