After repairing one too many busted leashes, Kaplan decided to make his own - a near-indestructible surf leash informed by the experience and know-how of someone who’s firsthand lost a beloved surfboard to the rocks below. Word soon got out, and Dakine was born.

In the decades since, Dakine expanded their offering and relocated to Hood River, Oregon, to follow the nucleus of their market. Windsurfing, mountain biking, skiing and snowboarding are all now part of the Dakine lexicon, bringing Kaplan’s same thirst for innovation to a plethora of products and activities beloved by outdoor adventurers today.
